Mixed Media Montage By Mary Becker Weiss ©2010 At first blush an observer may assume that this hulking, naked figure in the corner is the mute subject rendered speechless by the menacing approach of a stranger. On many levels, our society has indoctrinated us to believe that he has nothing to offer her. He appears completely vulnerable, defenseless. The stylish onlooker showing off her expensive clothes, Chanel handbag, and excessive gold jewelry in our society is defined as successful and, therefore, superior to him. On closer examination, however, this pedant is indeed quite vulnerable and has approached this gentle giant for comfort. He is unpretentious. He is powerful. He is magnificent. His eyes follow hers as she moves around him. His gaze is welcoming and reassuring. He extends a compassionate hand in friendship. He has taken her breath away. She is speechless. This moment, this miracle is the genesis of a new and abiding friendship. |
