Item Description
This mixed media pop art masterpiece called "Op Op Pop" by Thomas Mahady honors many of his revered mentors in the op and pop art world of the 1950's and 60's, such as Roy Lichtenstein, with whom he finished his final internship, Bridget Riley's black and white optical abstract images, Kazimir Malevich's fundamental geometric forms and Jasper Johns' mapping and flags among many other artists of the period, including Larry Rivers, Agnes Martin, Juan Gris and Ad Reinhardt.
By placing this op art piece in a lacquered antique frame, Mr. Mahady playfully mimicked a young Andy Warhol's obsession with aging by dying his hair white to stave off the visual shock of getting old. In its over-the-top presentation, he also surrounded the painting in plexiglass to poke fun at all the pretentious museum curators who encase priceless works of art in tacky plexiglass boxes to prevent the public from touching them.
An absolutely wonderful find for a serious op and pop art devotee who has both feet planted firmly on the ground!
