"In the summer of 1953 in Saginaw, Michigan, my grandfather was a prolific woodworker. My favorite of his many creations was a split log swing which he suspended under an old elm tree behind the barn. I still recall the sweet smell of newly cut logs mingled with the fragrance of mile high clover and honeysuckle fields. The summer breezes in Michigan were gentle and reassuring.   Mary Becker Weiss '09 I am beginning to discover more than 50 years later that I have been striving to recapture that essence ~ that peace and innocence of the summer of '53. I have several assemblages now on display at Corniche, some of which are inspired by love letters between Juliette Drouette and Victor Hugo, Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett and Nathaniel and Sophie Hawthorne.
